Competence and mastery

People persist at things they believe they are getting better at.

Perceived competence, the sense of being effective at something, predicts persistence and effort better than ability itself does. It is built mainly by experiences of succeeding at something difficult, and secondarily by seeing similar people succeed. Feedback shapes it: telling someone they are improving does less than letting them observe it.

How it shows up in software

Learning tools, creative tools and complex professional software all live or die on whether the user feels they are getting better. The failure mode is a tool that stays equally hard forever, or one that hides the user's growth behind an unchanging interface. progressive disclosure: Showing the few controls most people need, and keeping the rest one step away. is the interface answer: capability appears as the user becomes ready for it.

Using it well

  • Engineer an early real success, something the user could not do before and did within the first session.
  • Reveal advanced capability progressively, so the interface grows with the user instead of intimidating them at the start.
  • Show growth in the user's own terms, such as what they can now make, rather than as a level number.
  • Let difficulty be chosen, and make stepping down neutral rather than a marked failure.

Where it turns manipulative

  • Fake mastery, where levels and titles rise regardless of actual skill, produces confidence with nothing under it, which matters most in health, finance and safety-related products.
  • Gating basic function behind grind that teaches nothing turns mastery into time served.
  • Public competence comparisons in a learning product punish the people furthest behind, who are the ones the product is supposed to help.

Where you have seen it

  • Figma

Auto layout and components sit behind basic drawing, so power arrives after the first working file.

  • Excel

The formula bar supports a single sum and a full model in the same place, with no mode switch between them.

What the research says

  • Bandura, 1977Well evidenced

Proposed self-efficacy and identified mastery experience, seeing others succeed, persuasion and physiological state as its sources, in that order of strength.

Very large literature, mostly correlational in the field. The causal core comes from clinical work on phobia treatment.

  • Ryan and Deci, 2000Mixed evidence

Positioned competence as one of three needs supporting sustained, self-directed motivation.

  • Deci, Koestner and Ryan, 1999Mixed evidence

Found positive competence feedback supported intrinsic motivation where tangible rewards undermined it.

Grades are a judgement about the evidence, not about how useful the idea is. Plenty of contested effects are still worth knowing, as long as you do not cite them as settled.
